Puky is a 2D platformer in which the player controls a small zombie who tries to escape from an hospital. The zombie is constantly starving, the player has to manage finding access cards to escape and devoring human on his way.
Context
During my first year of learning game design, I participated in a game jam. The given theme being "Food's served", we decided to create a game centered on the idea of a zombie constantly starving. During 2 days, our team of 6 worked together to create this result. I discovered through this project how to work with other actors of a video game industry such as programers, 2D artists and sound designer.
My role on the project
During this game jam, I worked on game design and level design. I helped implementing the level design into the unity engine as well.
My contribution on the project
- Game Design of player mechanics and game systems
- Game balancing
- Level Design layout and implementation in the engine
Game design
Our group brainstormed together to find a concept based on the given theme. Me and the other game designer of the team started creating the player mechanics and system. Because of the lack of time, we did not make documentations but instead used blackboard and sheets to write down our idea and metrics.

Level design
We started working on level design as soon as the player mechanics were more or less defined. I first drew layout on a notebook to create generic challenges. Then, I created the map layout using generic size rooms and adding game systems along the way in the game engine.
The first part of the map layout is meant to teach the player the game mechanics. Depending on his choice of following either the right or left path, the player learn the mechanics in a different order but reach the first elevator on both path when all mechanics are learnt. So independently of which path the player takes, he ends up learning all the game mechanics anyway.
